A Morning That Changed Everything: Inside the Fourth Annual Books & Breakfast

Over a hundred children gathered in Poughkeepsie for a morning of books, creativity, and community — complete with arts and crafts, puzzle stations, coloring books, and a surprise visit from the Sheriff Department's canine unit that stole every heart in the room.

There's a particular kind of magic that happens when you put a brand-new book into a child's hands for the first time. Their eyes go wide. Their fingers trace the cover. They flip to the first page and the whole world goes quiet — just for a second — before the excitement takes over.

That moment happened dozens and dozens of times at the fourth annual Books & Breakfast, and it never got old.

Four Years of Building a Tradition

What started as a simple idea — pair breakfast with books and see what happens — has grown into one of Poughkeepsie's most anticipated community events for young families. The fourth annual Books & Breakfast, organized by Charlia Frank Inc., brought together children from across the City of Poughkeepsie for a morning that was equal parts celebration and quiet revolution.

Because fostering a love for reading in a community isn't just about handing out books. It's about creating an environment where literacy feels like joy, not homework. Where a child associates the weight of a book in their backpack with the warmth of a morning surrounded by people who showed up — specifically and intentionally — for them.

"When a child sees that an entire community showed up to put a book in their hands, that changes how they see themselves. They're not just readers — they're worth showing up for."

More Than Books: A Morning of Creative Discovery

The tables were loaded, and not just with reading material. Coloring books and puzzle sets lined the activity stations. Arts and crafts supplies covered every surface — markers, glue sticks, construction paper, stickers, scissors — everything a child needs to turn a blank sheet into something they're proud to carry home.

And the kids didn't hold back. They built, they drew, they invented. Some made cards for their parents. Others designed their own book covers. A few just went full abstract expressionist with the glitter glue, and honestly, those might have been the best pieces of the morning.

The Sheriff's K-9 Unit: The Surprise That Stole the Show

If there was one moment that captured the spirit of the entire morning, it was the arrival of the Dutchess County Sheriff Department's canine unit. The children absolutely lost it — in the best possible way.

Trained officers introduced their K-9 partners, explaining the important role these dogs play in keeping the community safe. The kids gathered around, wide-eyed and whispering to each other, before lining up for the chance to meet the dogs up close. Some children were tentative at first, reaching out with cautious hands. Within seconds, every last one of them was fully committed, crouching down, petting ears, giggling when a dog nudged their hand for more attention.

It was one of those moments where the line between "community safety education" and "pure childhood joy" disappeared completely. And that's exactly the point.

Books Distributed

Every child walked away with books, coloring books, and puzzles — all free. No strings attached, no library card required, no "return by" date. These books belong to them, and that ownership matters more than most people realize.

Smiles Earned

From the breakfast tables to the craft stations to the K-9 demo, every corner of the event was designed to make children feel seen, celebrated, and excited about learning. The smiles weren't performative — they were earned.

It Takes a Village — And Then Some

The fourth annual Books & Breakfast was made possible by an extraordinary coalition of community partners who donated their time, resources, and heart to make this morning happen for the children of Poughkeepsie.

Our Collaborating Partners

None of this happens without the organizations and individuals who believe — deeply and practically — that investing in children is the single most important thing a community can do. A profound thank you to every partner who made the fourth annual Books & Breakfast a reality:

Why Literacy Events Like Books & Breakfast Matter in Poughkeepsie

According to national literacy data, children who have access to books in their homes are significantly more likely to read at or above grade level. But access alone isn't the full story. When books arrive wrapped in community — in laughter, in breakfast, in the presence of police officers and judges and artists who all took time out of their Saturday to say you matter — the impact compounds in ways that data can't fully capture.

The fourth annual Books & Breakfast wasn't just an event. It was a statement: the children of Poughkeepsie deserve a community that invests in their imagination, their literacy, and their sense of belonging. And year after year, this community keeps showing up to prove it.
